Draft Art 5 reports

The Characterization report under Art 5 of the DMA serves to identify gaps of data, the main pressures and to prioritise key issues for water management. Consequently, comprehensive monitoring programmes must be prepared and implemented to fill information gaps and establish the environmental status of the water bodies.

The Characterization takes into account the water uses, pressures and their environmental impacts on waters, making an initial identification of the water bodies that are either at risk or not at risk of achieving the environmental objectives.

A draft characterization report has been made per each pilot basin: Meriç-Ergene, Susurluk, Büyük Menderes Basins and Konya Closed Basin.

Büyük Menderes

The total area of the river basin district is 26,361 km2. 172 water bodies have been identified: 38 groundwater, 81 river, 48 lake (above 50 hectares), 3 transitional (1 river and 2 lakes) and 2 coastal water bodies. In the Characterization report, a provisional identification of HMWB is done for inland surface waters. Among of all them, twenty-three (23) HMWB and twenty-five (25) AWB have been identified.

The water bodies identified by the initial characterization as being at risk include 2 of groundwater bodies and 21 of surface water bodies. Water bodies identified as being probably at risk include 32 of groundwater bodies and 90 of surface water bodies; further characterization will focus on these water bodies to confirm risk.

Konya

Total area of the river basin is 49,786 km2. 110 water bodies have been identified: 18 groundwater, 58 river and 34 lake (above 50 hectares) water bodies. In the Characterization report, a provisional identification of HMWB is done for inland surface water bodies. Among of all them, fourteen (14) HMWB and twelve (12) AWB have been identified.

The water bodies identified by the initial characterization as being at risk include 6 of groundwater bodies and 14 of surface water bodies. Water bodies identified as being probably at risk include 7 of groundwater bodies and 63 of surface water bodies; further characterization will focus on these water bodies to confirm risk.

Meriç-Ergene

Total area of the river basin district is 14,510 km2. 132 water bodies have been identified: 12 groundwater, 79 river, 37 lake (above 50 hectares), 3 transitional (1 river and 2 lakes) and 1 coastal water bodies. In the Characterization report, a provisional identification of HMWB is done for surface water bodies. Among of all them, twenty (20) HMWB and nineteen (19) AWB have been identified.

The water bodies identified by the initial characterization as being at risk include 3 of groundwater bodies and 18 of surface water bodies. Water bodies identified as being probably at risk include 9 of groundwater bodies and 92 of surface water bodies; further characterization will focus on these water bodies to confirm risk.

Susurluk

The total area of the river basin district is 26,790 km2. 180 water bodies has been identified: 24 groundwater, 107 river and 37 lake (above 50 hectares), 3 transitional (1 river and 2 lakes) and 9 coastal water bodies. In the Characterization report, a provisional identification of HMWB and AW is done for surface water bodies. Among of all them, seventeen (17) HMWB and eighteen (18) AWB have been identified.

The water bodies identified by the initial characterization as being at risk include 49 of surface water bodies. Water bodies identified as being probably at risk include 21 of groundwater bodies and 74 of surface water bodies; further characterization will focus on these water bodies to confirm risk.
